Away from the seaside bustle, the hinterland of Vélez-Málaga unfolds a string of white villages clinging to the mountainside. Whitewashed houses, lanes spilling with bougainvillea, terraces suspended above the valley: the Axarquía is the best-kept secret of the eastern Costa del Sol. Here are five gems to discover, all less than an hour from the coast.
Frigiliana, the prettiest façade in Andalusia
Regularly voted among the most beautiful villages in Spain, Frigiliana charms with its Moorish maze of cobbled alleys, turquoise doors and pots of geraniums. Lose yourself in the Barribarto, the old Morisco quarter, then settle in for a glass of sweet wine facing the Mediterranean.
Cómpeta, the balcony of the vineyards
At over 600 metres of altitude, Cómpeta watches over the muscat vineyards that made the region's name. People come for the light, for the silence, and for the moscatel wine still poured in family homes. The wine festival in mid-August sends the first harvest flowing from the village fountain.
The Mudéjar triangle: Sayalonga, Árchez and Salares
These three quiet hamlets preserve elegant Mudéjar minarets, relics of an Andalusi past. The round cemetery of Sayalonga, unique in Spain, and the trails linking the villages through olive and almond groves will delight lovers of walking and authenticity.
Canillas de Aceituno, at the foot of La Maroma
Set against the highest peak in the province, this village is the perfect base for hiking — or for tasting chivo al ajillo, a local speciality. Here, time seems to stand still.
Each of these villages deserves a slow lingering: a coffee on a terrace, a conversation with a craftsperson, a nap in the shade of a fig tree. That is the spirit we love to bring to life — taking the time to meet the real Andalusia. Tell us what you dream of, and we'll design the itinerary.
