Regularly voted Spain’s most beautiful village, Frigiliana stacks its whitewashed houses on the flank of the Sierra Almijara, six kilometres above Nerja. Blue doors, pots of geraniums, pebble mosaics: every lane of the Barribarto is a postcard.
The old Moorish quarter is explored on foot, uphill: stairways, vaulted passages and ceramic plaques telling the story of the 1569 revolt. At the top, the castle ruins and viewpoints over the sea. Below, Europe’s last cane-honey factory still perfumes the village, and craft shops sell the valley’s sweet wine and olive oil.
In late August, the Three Cultures Festival brings music, a market and food to the streets. The rest of the year, Frigiliana is best savoured early in the morning or at the end of the day, once the day visitors have gone back down to the coast.
